Bessemer Historical Society - Berwind Coal Mine

The Berwind Coal Mine, also known as El Moro No. 2, was located in Southeastern Colorado, in Las Animas County between Aguilar and Trinidad. It produced coking grade coal for CF&I coke oven plants located nearby. The Berwind Mine opened in 1890 and was closed in 1928 during a CF&I effort to centralize productions to increase efficiency. During its 38 years of operation it produced 9,076,980 tons of coal.
