MUSEUM

The Steelworks Museum is housed in the former 1901 CF&I Medical Dispensary. It features exhibits related to all facets of steelmaking and coal mining in the West, as well as the CF&I Mine Rescue Car Number 1, the only remaining wooden mine rescue railroad car in the United States.

ARCHIVES

The Steelworks Archives features the nationally recognized CF&I Collection, which includes 6000 boxes of manuscripts, over 100,000 photographs, about 30,000 unique maps and drawings, 228 motion picture films, thousands of ledgers, and internal publications such as Camp and Plant, The Industrial Bulletin, and The Blast.

EDUCATION

Education is a primary focus. Through school tours, after-school, weekend and summer camps, and outreach programs, we work with kindergarten through post-graduate students, and life-long learners, to educate the public about subject areas related to the industrial history of the West, and to the technology, engineering and medical fields that CF&I pioneered.

 Welcome to the Steelworks Center

The Steelworks Center of the West, originally established in 2000 as the Bessemer Historical Society, in Pueblo, Colorado, operates the Steelworks Museum and Steelworks Archives. Currently under development is the Steelworks Park, an outdoor space featuring large steel mill artifacts, and a future multi-use Steelworks Center to be built in the fully restored former 1901 CF&I Main Administration Building.

At the The Steelworks Center of the West we are very busy with projects and patrons. We're making great strides as we continue to fulfill our mission of protecting the historic archives, artifacts and buildings of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I), and the entire Industrial West. We need your support now more than ever.

Your gift to the Steelworks Center of the West is the foundation of our success and we need your continued help. You are investing in educational programming and historic preservation that will benefit future generations. Help us save the stories of the people who built the steel mill that built the West.

Currently, we are focused on some key areas and projects including:

  • We are making more records of the steel mill accessible including photographs, films, maps, drawings and financial ledgers. Digital catalogs are available in the Archives section of this web site.
  • We have over 30,000 maps and drawings in our collection. We have installed a digital media center with a high-resolution large format digital photo studio to help preserve these materials and allow more access to students, researchers and the public.
  • Our educational programming and outreach have continued to grow. We have increased attendance in the areas of school tours, after school activities, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum and humanities programming.
  • We are finishing the planning stages of an outdoor Steelworks Park that will feature large steel mill artifacts situated prominently next to I-25. Look for its completion in the summer of 2015.

DON’T FORGET!

Colorado individuals and businesses are eligible to receive a 25% Colorado State income tax credit for gifts of $250 or more through the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit program. Please call us at 719-564-9086 for more details.

Your donation to the Steelworks Center of the West is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

About Us

The Steelworks Center of the West provides continuing education to the public through the preservation of historic archives, artifacts and buildings of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I), and related activities leading to the industrialization of the entire Western United States.  The Steelworks Center accomplishes this by collecting, preserving and exhibiting collections of the steel and mining industry, Pueblo’s Bessemer neighborhood, and the contributions and impacts working families in those industries made in the industrial West.
