RECORDS AND GENEALOGY

The CF&I collection is a unique resource that is rich with information about the hundreds of thousands of individuals employed by CF&I and its subsidiaries throughout the company’s 121-year history. Included in the collection are employee cards and personnel files dating from approximately 1900 through 1993. These records are requested often by both family historians and former CF&I employees seeking their own records.

Early records are on microfilm or microfiche. These employee cards contain information such as date of birth, nationality, name of nearest relative, dependents, dates and location of employment, reason for leaving, last place employed, illnesses and injuries. Records for employees working after ca. 1970 are in paper format and include many types of documents.

To request a records search, local patrons can visit the Steelworks Museum and fill out a research request form. Requests can also be made on our online request form, or by calling our archives at 719-564-9086. The more information you can provide about an individual the more likely it is that records will be located. Important information beyond the name of the individual includes place of employment and approximate dates of employment. Even with this information, we may not be able to locate records for all former employees.

Please allow up to 2 weeks for requests to be fulfilled. Visit our fees page for information about record request fees. The Steelworks Archives generally does not charge for requests when no records are located.

Privacy

Personnel files can contain personal and sensitive information. In order to respect the privacy of individuals, access to records less than 70 years old is limited to only former employees who are requesting their own record, or immediate family members or other representatives of former employees. The Steelworks Archives retains the right to deny access to records due to privacy concerns.
